Rotoscoping is an animation technique where live-action footage is carefully traced, frame by frame, to create animated sequences with a lifelike quality. By closely following the original footage, this method preserves the natural movement of the source material, refraining from the exaggerating usually used in animation. When the drawings remain largely faithful to the live-action reference, the animation achieves a unique visual style that feels both realistic and creatively stylized.

This is the technique I used as assistant animator on The Blue Painter, a film directed and animated by Marga Doek. The project was an artistic interpretation of the paintings by Finnish artist Risto Suomi. The film was featured as part of the Blue Thoughts exhibition in 2020, where it was displayed alongside Suomi’s original pieces.
